Target Protein

A target protein is a specific biological macromolecule (typically a protein) that plays a key role in the pathogenesis and progression of a disease, serving as the foundational site of action for drug design. These proteins are usually involved in critical pathophysiological pathways, and abnormalities in their function or expression directly contribute to the disease phenotype. Examples include kinases, G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and ion channels. Modulating the activity or level of target proteins through small-molecule compounds, antibodies, or nucleic acid drugs aims to achieve therapeutic goals and is central to modern drug development.
